So you have a dairy goat… and you want milk … right.. well duh.. why else have a diary goat, well besides the fact that they are adorable right! Truth is dairy goats require extra management. They require extra work, and yes they require extra financial investment. So I am hoping at this point you have already made the commitment that you really want to own and care for a dairy animal. Some important things to remember is that dairy goats do not naturally exist in the wild… so trying to keep a dairy goat on strictly hay and pasture is just NOT GOING TO WORK!! Period… unless you have purchased said animal from a breeder who has been strictly breeding goats that maintain lactation on just pasture. But this is rare for a goat, since goats are browsers and not grazers. But that is for a whole different post. They require management. They have been bred by MAN to produce milk, therefore they must be properly cared for and managed.
Ok for the purpose of this post were going to focus on Does the most, some of this applies to Bucks as well, but this is mostly for your milking Does. I am going to assume you have read my post about buying a diary animal. I am going to assume that you are well aware of the costs involved in owning a dairy animal.. well maybe I should do a blog post on that… hmmm.. maybe later.. Anyway back to the point. The following is the basics… I mean basics.. bare minimum of management. It is in no way a complete list, nor is each item in depth. It is meant to be a basic guideline to get you started in your journey of research before buying a dairy goat. So let’s just get to it..
